Nearly everyone who lives in a cold and wet climate dreams of owning a property in the sun, and the Algarve is certainly becoming increasingly popular with more and more people buying property here every year. If offers excellent investment potential being easily accessible by air from most European cities; and the new motorway means that Spain and northern Portugal are a short drive away.
If property markets in other European countries seem to be slowing, this is certainly not the case in Portugal where prices are set to continue rising in the foreseeable future.
It is important to put together a checklist of what you want. If you want to live in the centre of town, do the old of new areas of Albufeira appeal to you? Do you want to be near to the beach or in the hills, etc. With the large number of villas on offer and still under development, the more complete information you can give the estate agent to begin with, the less arduous your search will become.
With its established infrastructure, position and popularity as a holiday resort, Albufeira is an excellent location to purchase a villa for use as a second home or holiday let. Talk to a few of the many estate agents in the area as they will be able to give you sound advice on the potential income you can expect and which is the best area to meet all your requirements. You can also get a feel from them on what local rental management would cost.
An area which is still relatively underdeveloped is the village of Guia which is just on the outskirts of Albufeira and there are still some bargains to be found here. It is well worth hiring a car and spending a couple of days driving round Albufeira the outskirts, with the excuse of having to stop in the odd bar or two to discuss the relative merits of each area.
